Which Skincare Products Should Not be Used Together?

Choosing the rightskincare products for your skin’s specific needs is vital. But that doesn’t mean you should be using every single product that offers benefits. There’s a reason thatskinimalism is becoming more popular. Layering on multiple products can end up causing more harm than you realise. It gets even more problematic when you use certain products together. Rather than giving you twice the goodness, you will end up with skin irritation and other side effects. You can also end up cancelling out ingredients in skincare products.

Avoid Using These Skincare Products Together

Understanding the key role in ingredients will help you know which skincare products to never use together.

    Vitamin A and vitamin C

Vitamin A derivatives such as retinol play a crucial part in anti-ageing. This vitamin helps to smooth fine lines, exfoliating and giving the skin a plumper look and feel. Products containing vitamin A should always be applied at night, as the vitamin increases photosensitivity, which can increase the risk of sun damage. Vitamin C, on the other hand, is best suited for day creams, as it is an antioxidant that helps to protect your skin against environmental damage. Each vitamin plays its own role. Layering them together can put your skin at risk of UV damage or other issues. You don’t have to forgo one or the other completely, though, as both have many benefits to your skin. Instead, use vitamin C in the morning and vitamin A at night.

    Retinol and BHAs/AHAs

AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA (beta hydroxy acids) are exfoliating ingredients that clear pores and remove excess sebum. They are often used in products made for acne or combination skin. Retinol serves a similar function, smoothing the skin, removing dead skin cells and removing fine lines and wrinkles. Used separately, they offer many benefits. Used together, they cancel each other out. They can dry out your skin and cause irritation.

    Doubled up products

In addition to ingredients that don’t play well together, you may also end up doubling up on products. You may not even realise you are doing so. Using a serum and a moisturiser that both contain the same active ingredients will not give you double the goodness. Always read ingredients carefully to identify the major active ingredients. It is also a good idea to know your skin needs. You can then choose products that contain the right ingredients.
